Has U.S. currency as we know it today always been pretty much the same? The answer is no.
- There used to be:
- 2-cent coin and
- bills for 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents
- Martha Washington was the first (1886) and only woman to ever appear on U.S. paper money (the $1 silver certificate) and
- the penny, as we know it today, was introduced in 1909 to commemorate Lincoln’s 100th birthday and was the only coin to have a right-facing portrait. Hmmm.
