You know all about gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, uranium, and perhaps even molybdenum, but what about tantalum?
What is Tantalum?
Tantalum is a rare metal with the majority of reported production (2024) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (1,270 tonnes – 50.8%), Nigeria (390 tonnes – 15.6%), Rwanda (374 tonnes – 15.0%), Brazil (210 tonnes – 8.4%), China (76 tonnes – 3.0%), Mozambique (55 tonnes – 2.2%), and Australia (52 tonnes – 2.1%); see Figure 1. However, reserves are reported only for China (240,000 tonnes), Australia (120,000 tonnes), Brazil (40,000 tonnes), and Russia (150 tonnes), highlighting how tantalum is often a by-product of mining for other metals.
This high-performance metal has a high melting point, high strength, high ductility, high reliability, high resistance to corrosion, and high thermal conductivity, making it a highly efficient, highly reliable, and environmentally versatile component for use in a wide variety of applications that contribute significantly to our economy and way of life.
What is the Market for Tantalum?
According to a Project Blue Group report in 2024 citing tantalum consumption in 2022:
- 39%: Capacitors used in the electronics industry, including products such as cell phones and computers, because of its unequaled capacity to store and release electrical charges.
- 21%: Chemicals such as tantalum oxide and lithium tantalate, used in camera and optical lenses, the signal filters in smartphones, and industrial catalysts.
- 16%: Sputtering targets, which are high-purity tantalum plates used to deposit ultra-thin films onto silicon wafers in the manufacture of semiconductors and memory chips.
- 11%: Superalloys for jet engines, turbines, space vehicles, nuclear reactors, power plants, and chemical equipment because of its strength at very high temperatures.
- 9%: Mill products such as sheet, plate, rod, wire, and tubing for chemical processing equipment, and because of its corrosion resistance, furnace parts and medical implants.
- 4%: Cemented carbides for cutting tools, drill bits, excavator and bulldozer teeth, and the forming of dies.
What is the Supply and Demand for Tantalum?
According to the US Geological Survey Mineral Commodity Summaries report:
- Worldwide production of tantalum was 2,500 tonnes in 2024 (about 5.5 million pounds), up almost 26% from 1,990 tonnes in 2022.
- The US now imports 100% of its requirements. Consumption was 566 tonnes in 2024 and an estimated 890 tonnes in 2025 (about 1.25 and 1.96 million pounds, respectively). Recycling may supply as much as 30% of what domestic primary processors require.
- The US Defense Logistics Agency planned to acquire up to 29.26 tonnes of tantalum in FY2025 and, in September 2025, awarded an $8.6 million order for tantalum ingots along with a five-year contract worth up to $100 million to maintain a domestic source.
With the changing geopolitical situation, the major concern is the rising demand and supply risk due to the concentration of supply from the DRC, Rwanda, and Nigeria (about 81% of 2024 output).
What is the Current Price of Tantalum?
Tantalum is not traded on the commodity metals markets but, rather, the price is freely negotiated between supplier and processor. As such, over the past 30 years, the tantalum market has been marked by long periods of stability, punctuated by very sharp price hikes created by a combination of strong demand and fear about a shortage of supply.
Tantalite, the ore from which tantalum is produced, is priced by the amount of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) it contains. According to the USGS, the price averaged $167/kg of contained Ta2O5 in 2024 and reached $180/kg by November 2025.
Prices then rose sharply in early 2026: Argus Media reported tantalite at $328 to 344/kg in February, up 43% from the start of the year. The price jump came after a deadly collapse at the Rubaya mine in the DRC cut supply at a time of strong demand from Artificial Intelligence (AI) hardware and government stockpiling.
As of October 2026, Argus Media reported that tantalite prices are holding firm at these elevated levels as the tight supply cannot keep pace with AI infrastructure demand.
How can an Investor Profit from Tantalum?
Investors looking for exposure to tantalum have no pure-play option, because most tantalum is mined by small-scale operators in central Africa and the largest processors are privately held.
Exposure comes instead through companies that produce tantalum alongside lithium or tin, such as:
- AMG Critical Materials (ENXTAM: AMG)
- Liontown (ASX: LTR)
- PLS Group (ASX: PLS)
- Andrada Mining (AIM: ATM)
Or through processors such as:
- JX Advanced Metals (TSE: 5016)
- Materion (NYSE: MTRN)
- Ningxia Orient Tantalum (SZSE: 000962)
Or through capacitor makers such as:
- Vishay Intertechnology (NYSE: VSH)
- Kyocera (TSE: 6971)
- Yageo (TWSE: 2327)
For these companies, tantalum is only part of the business, so the share price will be driven largely by other factors.
Here are some exploration companies that include tantalum as part of their project package:
| Company & Ticker | Flagship Project / Region | Primary Focus & Tantalum Details |
| Grit Metals Corp. (TSXV: FIN) | Central Finland | • Focused on LCT pegmatites • Targeting high-grade lithium, cesium, tantalum, and associated rare metals • Located near established regional infrastructure |
| Lion Rock Resources (TSXV: ROAR) | Volney Project, South Dakota, USA | • Explores critical minerals and gold • Extended surface tin and tantalum mineralization • Preparing for Phase 2 drilling |
| New Age Metals (TSXV: NAM) | Winnipeg River Pegmatite Field, Manitoba | • Large landholder in pegmatite belt • Exploring hard-rock lithium, cesium, and tantalum • Benefiting from regional critical-metal demand |
| Tantalex Lithium Resources (CSE: TTX) | Manono Tailings and Titan Projects, DRC | • Producing tin and tantalum concentrate • Revenue generation offsets lithium market cycles |
For any public company, investors need to research the companies, do their analyses, make an informed choice as to which ones to invest in, and deploy their investment dollars accordingly. Tantalum is, indeed, a tantalizing investment opportunity that warrants further study.
